Hi Marty and Connor,
I've enjoyed being part of the ZBA, for the past 12 (or has it been 13?) years, but it's time for
me to do other things. Since the board lacks alternates, I can keep attending meetings
until we get another board member signed on.
Who else should I contact about withdrawing from the ZBA?
Thanks,
Chris
Hi Chris,
I'm sorry to hear you are leaving. It has been a pleasure working with you the past few years.
Thank you for your mentorship to me in my early days and for your service to the Town. I
appreciate your offer to attend meetings until we find a replacement. That will help. I added
Judy on this email as she probably needs to know more than anyone. Judy, feel free to
forward this to anyone else that needs it.
I'm sure I'll see you at the next meeting Chris, but regardless I wish you well in your future!

ITHACA TOWN CLERK
To:Tompkins &Town of Ithaca leadership
To Whom It May Concern,
Good day and a happy New Year.I hope you and our family are well.
My family and I are writing as your constituents to urge you to take action in your role as
a representative of our communities to make housing more plentiful and affordable.
As with so many places in our nation,Tompkins County and the town of Ithaca are facing a
shortage of housing in general and housing which working and middle class families can afford
in particular.
We are writing to urge you to take action to make changes to local building processes.
We believe that many of our current zoning regulations, permitting requirements, and
bureaucratic hurdles have become significant barriers construction we need.We ask that you
consider:
Simplify the permitting process overall
Make zoning codes more flexible and grant exceptions more quickly to allow for
more housing types, such as duplexes, townhomes, and accessory dwelling units, even
in areas currently restricted to single-family lots
Reduce onerous requirements:Remove minimum parking requirements and eliminate
or reduce lot-size mandates i
Make the process simpler for builders:Better coordination between town and county
departments would prevent the conflicting requirements that can slow down projects
Allow for the installation of modular housing:This is a more-radical step;some
experts who have looked at the shortage of affordable housing In the United States have
said that we need to change the way housing itself is constructed. The industry itself is in
Its infancy at this point but if it grows (and nothing will help it to grow so much as
allowing this kind of housing to be sold and put in place at scale),it could do a great deal
to help with the cost of housing.
The goal overall should be to make Ithaca and Tompkins County a place where it is easy to
invest and build and hence for ordinary people to afford a place to live.
We are aware that home ownership is a significant portion of many families'wealth in the United
States.Building a lot more housing might have an effect on that. But as parents,we would place
greater value on knowing that our own child--and all the next generation-will have a chance to
afford a place to live, including right here in the community he was raised in.
We look forward to hearing of thoughtful and prompt action on your part on this issue.
