(Last Thursday’s meeting of the Town Planning
Board prompted a sad demonstration of how ri
diculous a zoning ordinance can become*

Zoning in the Town of Ithaca is seen by the
Planning Board as something for the few,for
special interests and/or certain situations
They view zoning not as a positive force for
aiding the Town’s growth,but as a negative
force, written and re-written to cover special
”problems”as they arise*

312 E.SENECA ST.The casein point is that of a trailer,located
on "agricultural property"and belonging to an
agriculture student."You may have read a next
door neighbor’s view of this situation in last
week's TOWN CRIER.Now,the Planning Board has
"ratified"a change in the zoning laws in order
to allowamobile home to be placed on agricul
tural property by an owner where his main
source of gross income is earned by farming
AND where one of the occupants of the trailer
is a full-time farm employee OR a bonafide ag
ricultural student. If this is not zoning for
the few and disregard for the many,we’re ber
serk!

change is so apparent we are sincerely thrilled
to think that the Planning Board may make only
recommendations,and not laws,
along with others in Town (especially those
whose highly-taxed and carefully-kept homes
are located near "agricultural property"-most
of which is not being farmed, but merely classed
as such because this will keep taxes down un
til the area can be subdivided for building
lots)that the Town Board, which does make the
laws, will see through this transparent scheme.

Elsewhere in this Issue you*ll see an ad for
the Cornell University Athletic Association's

values in sports entertainment, that could be
described as the understatement of the year.I
say this mainly for the benefit of newcomers
to town, because long-time residents know what
it's all about.
